Hareline Coq De Leon

Hareline Coq de Leon hackles are authentic imported CDL from the the Leon Region of Spain. These are spade hackles which are hand harvested from CDL Roosters. These are quite rare and have a limited supply. Originally, CDL was used to make flies similar to our wet flies. Early patterns date from the 1600’s and pre date, early UK patterns. Some other more modern patterns use these like a Compara Dun or also use them for spinner hackle. It is believed that the water table in this region provides unique minerals that change the structure of the feathers and make them speckled, stiff with long fibers.

Given the scarcity of these and the limited availability, some customers that are interested in Euro patterns might be better served by using golden badger hackle or fine grizzly. In many instances these CDL hackles are only harvested a few times a year from very small flocks. These may be one of the few fly tying materials that can legitimately claim to be ethically harvested.
